How to Care for Wild Birds in Winter, Part 2

(See Part 1, Food and Feeders, here.)

Water- Growing up here in Tennessee, I watched everyone take down their bird baths once the weather got cold. I heard that leaving a bird bath up was a death sentence for birds because they would jump into cold water to bathe and die of shock. That isn’t true. Birds just aren’t that stupid. (A point that gets harder and harder to prove every time a Mourning Dove gets startled and flies into the side of my house.) Birds need drinking water and I’d rather they get it from my clean(ish) bird bath than a scummy puddle under someone’s car. read more »

Snow Day Links

Let me guess, your kids played in the snow for twenty minutes before they were wet, cold, and begging to come back inside. So you stuck them in front of the TV and now here you are at the computer. Not proud of yourself, are you?

It’s okay. You aren’t alone.  I told my kids they were letting all of the heat out of the house when they kept running in and out of the door and one of them said, “So?”

Now I’m making them watch Alive. That should teach them.

For those of you in Wisconsin and Minnesota, who have gotten 18 and 23 inches, respectively, I’d like to let you know that here in Chattanooga, TN, we’ve gotten an inch of snow and the city is shut down.

Here are some links to ease the pain: read more »

Bird Brains

My dad shared his love of birds with us by pointing out hawks while he was driving and then giving the hawk his full attention despite the fact that he was still driving the car down the road at 60mph. Meanwhile, the passengers of the car would be saying, “Road! Look at the road!” It was a long time before I could see a hawk soaring in the sky without going into a cold sweat. Despite the deep emotional scarring in my youth, I do enjoy birdwatching today. read more »

FVTF, Part Eight, Sea Bird Island

We stopped by Sea Bird Island on our way back from Daytona Beach one day and got to have this fun exchange.

Wesley: Where are we going?

Me: Sea Bird Island.

Wesley: I want to see Bird Island.

Me: No, Sea Bird Island.

Wesley: I do! I want to see Bird Island!

 Argh.

  Pictures and commentary

Part Five, A wondrous bird is the pelican, whose mouth can hold more than his belly can…

One of the nice things about dragging myself out of bed at 6:15 was the friendliness of the other crazies early risers. Everyone seemed happy that I was taking pictures of the beautiful sunrise and I got a lot of waves and smiles. Turns out I had forgotten to put pants on. Kidding!

I got tickled at the people who would stop so they wouldn’t get in my shot, even though I was really just fiddling with the zoom or checking to see if the camera was level. Don’t worry, folks, that sun isn’t going anywhere. After it happened a few times, I was sure to stand up when people were about to go by so I wouldn’t interrupt their walk.

A group of women waved, asked if I’d seen the dolphin, and pointed down the beach to where they had spotted one earlier. I thanked them but I had no intention of walking along the beach because I was sleepy and probably suffering significant blood loss from all the bugs. The sun had risen, the pelicans were calmly gliding along the tops of the waves, and nothing else was going on so I decided to pack it in.

I had the tripod back in its case and was packing up the camera when I heard a few splashes behind me. The pelicans were diving for their breakfast. I had to try to catch them in the act. read more »

What We’re Reading

Book of the Week:
The Family Kitchen GardenThe Family Kitchen Garden: How to Plant, Grow, and Cook Together, by Karen Liebreich, Jutta Wagner, and Annette Wendland

This book has all the information you need to start or expand a family garden. The first section is an introduction to gardening that lays out the basic necessities for a garden the whole family can enjoy. The next section has a chapter for each month and lists what to plant, what to harvest, and what get ready. Nearly every month has a recipe for what’s in season and a craft. My favorites are the recipe for do-it-yourself fruit roll-ups and the instructions for building a ladybug/lacewing nesting house.

Other books we’ve enjoyed this week…
